Because of the timing of our vacation in August, I did not feature the pets of the month column.

The North York animal shelter is calling for readers to visit the facility and meet two special furry friends: Tank and Lucky. A branch of Toronto Animal Services, the North York location can be found at 1300 Sheppard Ave. W., which is near Keele Street. For more information visit www.toronto.ca/animalservices or call 416-338-8723.

Tank is a three-year-old neutered male Shepherd mix who is a big strong boy with a soft heart. He needs room to run and play, so a home that offers a large, securely fenced yard would be ideal.

Tank was a bit shy when he arrived as a stray, but has really come out of his shell. He will need a family or individual devoted to training, adequate exercise and TLC and he will become a loyal, well-behaved companion.

His animal I.D. number is A457459.

Lucky is a two-year-old spayed, female, domestic short-hair cat who has been waiting for that special someone for many months. Shelter staff thought they had found her forever home, but unfortunately the adoption didn't work out because the other cat in the household would not accept Lucky into her home.

She is a sweetheart of a cat who loves to be petted and rolls on her back for belly rubs. She gets along with other cats, loves people, is litter-box trained and would be a wonderful addition to any family.

Her animal I.D. number is A407267.
