A 40-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries Tuesday evening when she was struck by a car while crossing Ellesmere Road at Deep Dene Drive, east of Morrish Road.

Sgt. Tim Burrows of the traffic services unit said the victim was crossing from the south side of Ellesmere after getting off a TTC bus at about 7:15 p.m. An eastbound Chrysler Neon travelling in the passing lane hit the pedestrian and carried her for about 30 feet before she fell off.

The Neon's windshield was shattered by the impact.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for emergency treatment.

"It is too early at this point in time to determine whether charges will be laid," Burrows said at the scene.

Police closed Ellesmere between Morrish and Scarboro Avenue for several hours as they investigated. Witnesses to the collision are asked to call traffic services at 416-808-1900.
