NORTH YORK: Million-dollar blaze under investigation

The fire marshal’s office continues to probe a $1-million blaze at a large North York home.

The four-alarm fire started in the furnace shortly after noon on Friday, Nov. 14 and spread throughout the house, located on Yorkminster Road near Bayview Avenue and Hwy. 401.

“The occupants making the call told dispatch that everyone was out of the house and that the house was full of smoke. When the firefighters arrived, they proceeded down into the basement under heavy smoke conditions,” Toronto Fire Services Capt. David Eckerman said.

“Initially they believed that the fire was knocked down, but within minutes they were still experiencing heavy smoke conditions.”

The roof collapsed at 2:14 p.m. One firefighter was taken to hospital with chest pains.

There were no other injuries reported.?Police, ambulance and more than two dozen fire trucks were at the scene.
