Chronic back pain can be caused by several things and conquering that pain can be a task in and of itself.

Here are some simple tips to help you avoid low back pain, as well as what to do once you have it:

  • Good posture is important, so sit up straight.
  • Do core strengthening exercises like pilates to support the spine.
  • Sometimes all people need is a good mattress and pillow. You need support for both your spine and neck when you are sleeping,
  • Orthopedic pillows with special contours that help you support the natural curve of your neck while you're sleeping.
  • There are also water pillows that you can fill up to your desired firmness. It accommodates for your movements while still supporting your spine in your sleep - this is often recommended through chiropractor and is not available in regular stores.
  • To find the right pillow, measure the distance between the shoulders to the base of the neck and find a pillow that accommodates that length because then you have the right amount of space to support your neck and shoulder.
  • Having flat feet, or one arch bigger than the other, can also affect your pain. If your body is off balance it can affect your posture, knees, lower back and puts your posture off kilter.
  • Orthopedic shoes are immensely beneficial. The shock absorption can help prevent back pain.
  • Self neck and back cracking is not good for the joints.
  • Research the chiropractic place you are planning to visit to make sure they are registered with The College of Chiropractors of Ontario (something they have to be in order to practice in Ontario), and always ask questions.
  • There are circumstances when chiropractic treatment is not recommended. For example, neck pains can be a sign of another medical problem. This is why a full assessment is important to determine if chiropractic care is appropriate at that time.
